Douglas Fir Logs Back On The SAWMILL: Milling Soffit Boards For The BARNDOMINIUM House

In this video Greg gets Douglas Fir logs back on the sawmill to mill soffit boards for our barndominium. He had a goal of 120 boards in one day, but starts to have some trouble with the sawmill lift.

We are building our barndominium - barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill. If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the first slab summer of '23, we milled most of the timbers needed over this past winter/spring, added plumbing, put in a second slab for our garage and now we have started building our barndominium - barnhouse - lodge - our home, with 8 bents going up being the first step in our excitement! After, we secured the bents, we added girts, SIPs, finished the standing seam metal roof, installed our huge, direct set window, installed the doors, the garage doors, framed the outside walls and installed the windows on the first floor, completed the subfloor upstairs, framing the second story walls for windows, installed the windows, completed framing of the interior walls on the second floor, framed a 60 foot wall on the first floor of our barndominium, finished rough in framing for the plumber, framed the mudroom, the pantry and the beginnings of the fireplace. We have now completed the septic system install, including the leach field and now are focused on milling again. Still so much milling to go.

***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!

Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:

3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
