Finding your voice. Punk rock and the DIY mentality : Richard Jobson at TEDxBedford

A young Jobson began his creative life as a musical upstart, the front man in art-punk band The Skids. Their biggest hit, the 1979 single 'Into the Valley' is still a perennial favourite today. He moved on to become a much recorded spoken word artist, a successful poet and performer. He has since become more or less all things creative. He's a respected writer, an award-winning film director, a TV presenter, a producer and an all-round media professional. His work as a film director is perhaps his most recent triumph. In 2003, Jobson directed the adaptation of his own book -- 16 Years of Alcohol. The film went on to win the Best Director award at the British Independent Film Awards. Jobson has not been seduced by the lure of big-budget films though. He is committed to the art of storytelling, and finds that doing this under certain financial constraints actually improves the creative process -- cutting away the unnecessary expense of CGI and flamboyant sets, this renders a tight, lean cinematic experience. He is a passionate, ruthless and above all honest filmmaker, and his energy and discipline in all his creative endeavours make him a continued force to be reckoned with.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
