I don't know if Monica was the first to perform it, but nobody performed it like Monica. At the time, this was one of those songs that Monica could have copyrighted, because once you saw her perform it, it ruined it for anybody else. The first time I saw her was when she used it as her farewell performance as National Entertainer of the Year 1996, and she was breathtaking and had the song working for her. One of the greatest entertainers I had the pleasure of knowing.
