Latest Announcement by IRCC-Canada will set targets to reduce Temporary Resident arrivals-21 March 2024
The validity of Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) will be reduced to six months, down from the previous 12 months. This means employers need to ensure their LMIA accurately reflects current labor market needs.

Canada will lower the quota for temporary foreign workers in some areas as of May 1st, 2024. The percentage of low-wage foreign workers under the foreign work permit program is to be changed from 30% to 20%.

However, exceptions are granted to the construction and healthcare sectors due to critical labor shortages. These sectors can still employ up to 30% of their workforce through the low wage stream until at least August 31, 2024.

The agricultural sector remains unaffected for employees and employers meeting labor market impact assessment requirements.

Additionally, sectors with seasonal demand such as fishing, seafood, food processing, and tourism will continue to benefit from a yearly seasonal cap exemption introduced in 2022, allowing work durations of up to 270 days.
