When I took the job watching a remote cabin deep in the Rocky Mountains, I thought it would be simple—just an easy paycheck and time alone with nature.
But on my first night, taped to the fridge, I found a list of rules.
Not warnings.
Not guidelines.
Rules for staying alive.
Rule #1: Lock every door before sunset. The forest gets loud at night, but don’t check the windows. It’s never the wind.
Rule #2: If you hear footsteps on the porch, ignore them. Do NOT answer—no matter who they claim to be.
Rule #3: Leave food on the back steps before midnight. If it’s gone by morning, don’t question it. If it’s still there… leave the cabin immediately.
Rule #4: Never look at the mountains after 3:17 AM. If you see the silhouette moving… you’re already too late.
No one told me who wrote the rules.
No one told me what happened to the last caretaker.
But now the forest is whispering. Something is walking around the cabin.
And rule #2… is about to be tested.
