Well Foundation Civil Construction Process | Deep Foundation Bridge Construction | Civil Engineering

In this video you will learn about the process involved in the construction of well foundations, well foundations has following components
1. Cutting Edge : it is the lower most component of the foundation, it is provided to facilitate sinking operation of the well, when we start sinking procedure it helps in providing us proper space for sinking to keep is smooth process. it is made up of either steel plate of concrete, in case of steel we provide two 12 mm thick plates placed back to back and welded.
2 . Curb : it is concrete structure just above the cutting edge, it helps in transferring the load of the well to the cutting edge.
3. Steining : It is the most important part of the well, it is the main wall of the structure, it is the structure which is considered in the design as it serves the main purpose of load transfer.
4. Bottom Plug : It is a closure component of the well in the bottom, after completion of the sinking operation, excessive excavation can cause damage to the main structure, in other words complete stability will not be achieved, to serve this purpose we close the bottom portion of the well by placing concrete upto curb height, at greater depth, we cant see the actual level of concreting so we always keep is assumed.
5. Top Plug : After filling the hollow portion in the well with suitable material like sand, we close the upper portion with concrete, and this concreted portion is called as top plug.
6. Well Cap : It is a final structure of the well which transfer the load of the bridge to steining by means of pier or abutment, means to transfer the load of the bridge to well foundation this well cap is constructed..

Construction Steps of Well Foundation :
1. Preparation of Cutting Edge : It is prepared with the help of the fabricators on site at the position where we foundation is to be constructed.
2. Construction of Curb : We start shuttering work just after we place the cutting edge in position and all the process of reinforcement work and concrete casting work is completed and after setting of concrete the shuttering is removed and curing and guage marking are done.
3. Sinking of Well : After this process we can start the sinking of well is started, for this purpose we use grabbers, which excavates the earth inside the well and sinking operation proceeds.
4. Steining Construction : After the sinking process get started we construct the further steining lifts and the process of sinking continues in same manner.
5. Bottom Plug Concrete : After we complete the sinking operation, we start the bottom plug concrete operation with the help of tremmie pipe arrangement.
6. Sand Filling : the hollow portion above the bottom plug is filled by sand of the similar material upto bottom level of top plug. during filling of sand compaction of sand is also done.
7. After filling the sand we close the well with the help of top plug concrete.
8. And in the final stage we construct a RCC Well cap on the top of bottom plug, and finally we can start the construction of sub structure.
