Seanchaí Cóilín Ó Cualáin from Maíros in Iorras Aithneach in the Connemara Gaeltacht tells stories about Saint Patrick.
One of the last traditional storytellers of the Fenian cycle, Cóilín Ó Cualáin is also a poet. One story he tells here is about the warrior Oisín. Son of Fionn MacCumhaill, leader of The Fianna, Oisín was enticed by the beautiful and ethereal Niamh to leave Ireland for a magical land.
“Oisín Mac Fionn a thóg Niamh Cinn Óir, thóg sí go Tír na nÓg é, trí chéad bliain sula dtáinig Naomh Pádraig go h-Éirinn riamh.”
Unfortunately, Oisín’s longing to return home results in him turning into a feeble old man when his foot accidentally touches Irish soil. He is brought to Saint Patrick, who eventually converts him to Christianity after showing him a vision of hell.
This episode of ‘Féach’ was broadcast on 13 March 1980.
