In this video, the historian David Mitchell talks about the maps created by John Ogilby in 1675, the reasons why he created them, the methods he used and looks in detail at the map of the route from Oxford to Bristol.
John Ogilby was the first person to accurately measure distances in England and Wales, and established the Statute Mile as the unit of distance we still use today.
The Oxford to Bristol route follows the ancient route of the North Wessex Way, with its origins back in the Iron Age and possibly earlier.
