-----------Composition Notes-----------
Georg Schantl was the brother of the famous horn player and pedagogue, Josef Schantl. Georg was a horn player and composer as well as the music director of the Viennese military.

The Schantl's four quartets are based on traditional Austrian melodies.

-The Steirischer-Nationale-Lieder-Marsch is a four-part reduction of an old styrian march, and sets a nostalgic mood for the subsequent serenades.
-The second quartet, Morgenständchen {Morning Serenade}, opens with a deep yawn in the 4th horn. A gentle, awakening chorale follows.
-Abendständchen {Evening Serenade} is a slightly more lively serenade than the preceding quartet. Its winding chromatic theme captures the drunken energy of an evening stroll.
-The final quartet, Abschieds-Ständchen {farewell serenade} aptly instills feelings of a melancholy parting combined with the hopes of a forthcoming reunion. The operatic gestures of the first horn seem to say the parting words: "Auf Wiedersehen!"
