The Robot That Broke the Rules — And What It Means for the Future of AI | Wojciech Matusik | TEDxMIT

What if the biggest breakthrough in artificial intelligence is not about making it smarter, but about teaching it when to break the rules?

MIT Professor Wojciech Matusik discovered this firsthand when his laboratory's evolutionary AI created a jumping robot that broke every rule the team thought mattered for efficient movement. It looked awkward. It defied conventional wisdom. It should have failed. Instead, it jumped higher than anything the team had ever designed by hand.
This rule-breaking robot revealed a deep paradox: history's greatest innovations often succeeded by challenging the rules, yet modern AI systems are designed to follow patterns derived from past data. As a result, we are optimizing what is already known rather than exploring what remains undiscovered.
In this talk, Professor Matusik shares a new vision for AI. Rather than serving only as brilliant apprentices who perfect existing solutions, AI systems can become creative collaborators that question assumptions. Drawing on work from his laboratory, where scientific laws were treated as flexible game rules that AI could rewrite, he illustrates how machines can learn when and how to break rules with purpose.

As the world faces complex challenges such as climate change and global resource scarcity, progress will require more than small improvements. It will require paradigm shifts. To meet these challenges, we must build AI that dares to imagine what lies beyond the known, just as that awkward little robot did.

AI, Creativity, Design, Future, Innovation, Robots "Wojciech Matusik is the Cadence Design Systems Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, where he leads the Computational Design and Fabrication Group. His research focuses on artificial intelligence, computational design, computer graphics, and robotics.
Professor Matusik is a recognized leader at the intersection of academia and industry. He has co-founded technology startups and held research positions at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories, Adobe Systems, and Disney Research Zurich. His work has been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Humboldt Research Award, the DARPA Young Faculty Award, and selection as one of MIT Technology Review's Top 100 Innovators.
What drives Professor Matusik's research is his passion for building AI that can be a true creative collaborator. He explores how AI can learn not just to follow patterns, but to question assumptions and discover which rules are ready to be broken. His TEDx talk features one such breakthrough: an evolutionary AI that created an unconventional jumping robot that outperformed all traditional designs. Through his research, he envisions AI systems that will help humanity tackle its greatest challenges by designing beyond the limits of existing data." This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
