MIT Professor Wojciech Matusik discovered this firsthand when his laboratory's evolutionary AI created a jumping robot that broke every rule the team thought mattered for efficient movement. Drawing on work from his laboratory, where scientific laws were treated as flexible game rules that AI could rewrite, he illustrates how machines can learn when and how to break rules with purpose.

As the world faces complex challenges such as climate change and global resource scarcity, progress will require more than small improvements. It will require paradigm shifts. To meet these challenges, we must build AI that dares to imagine what lies beyond the known, just as that awkward little robot did.
