On October 26, 2025, locomotive 487 hauled freight east toward Antonito, Colorado, for the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's Fall Photo Freight Charter. This special 2-day event showcased the 100-year-old K-36 locomotives and freight cars restored by the Friends.
This video showcases Whiplash Curve is made up of two horseshoe curves that allow the train to climb. Going back and forth to climb the mesa allowed the railroad to keep the grade between 1 and 2%.
