Urinary tract obstruction: Blockages in the urinary tract, such as kidney stones, tumors, or structural abnormalities, can prevent urine from draining properly. This obstruction can lead to a buildup of urine in the kidneys, causing them to swell.
Kidney stones: The formation of kidney stones, which are hard deposits of minerals and salts that can block the urinary tract, may result in hydronephrosis.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Infections of the urinary tract can cause inflammation and swelling of the kidneys. If left untreated, UTIs can lead to more serious complications, including kidney damage.
Pregnancy-related conditions: In pregnant women, the growing uterus can sometimes exert pressure on the ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder), causing a temporary blockage and subsequent kidney swelling.
Congenital abnormalities: Some individuals may be born with structural abnormalities in the urinary tract that can contribute to kidney swelling.
Blood clot: A blood clot in the veins leading to the kidneys (renal vein thrombosis) can obstruct blood flow, leading to kidney swelling.
Tumors: Both benign and malignant tumors in or around the kidneys can cause compression and blockage of the urinary tract, resulting in kidney swelling.
Neurogenic bladder: Conditions that affect nerve function, such as spinal cord injuries or neurological disorders, can disrupt normal bladder function and lead to kidney swelling.
