I’ve always found it fascinating that English uses the word “do” constantly, but Spanish doesn’t actually have a direct translation for it. In English, you hear it everywhere: do you want this, do your homework, what do you mean? But when you start learning Spanish, you realize there’s no single word that works the same way. That can feel confusing at first, especially if you’re an English speaker who’s just starting your Spanish learning journey. In this video, I break down exactly why there’s no one-to-one word for “do” in Spanish and what native speakers use instead.
We’ll look at how the verb hacer sometimes fills the role of “do,” but also how other common Spanish verbs like poder, querer, and estar actually take its place depending on the sentence. This is a perfect example of how Spanish grammar works differently from English grammar, and why it’s so important to move past direct translation and start thinking the way Spanish speakers do.
