A rock ballad with a conscience — written for anyone who’s ever felt the fight between their better self and their shadows.
Math of the Heart
In every heart beneath the bone,
Two hungry shadows guard the throne.
One multiplies the tiny sparks…
One drinks the light and loves the dark.
Do the math… of your heart.
In a valley under iron skies, beneath a sacred stone,
Two unseen wolves haunt human souls, each carving out a throne.
Lumen runs on laughter, leaves his footprints made of light,
Howling when a broken soul is lifted back to life.
Virex coils through poisoned thoughts, a serpent made of spite,
Fattened on our sharpened tongues, prowling through the night.
From our first uncertain breath, hidden in the dark,
Both of them are pacing in the crimson human heart.
Every kindness is a seed, every wound can be a spark,
Feeding wolves that count our choices in the dark…
Wolves beneath the mountain, howling in my chest,
One builds a kingdom out of love, one burns what’s left.
More than who will conquer when the hungers start—
It’s the math of the heart… the math of the heart!
Every word, every silence like an arrow to the chart—
I’ll feed the wolf who gives back more
than he devours in my heart.
Kael, a restless traveler with his doubts like rusted chains,
Climbed the broken mountain path through mist and iron rain.
Rumors rode the freezing wind: “The wolves decide your fate—
Feed the right one, win your life, feed the wrong one, drown in hate.”
Near the summit, by the fire where clouds and stone divide,
An ageless woman stirred the coals with worlds behind her eyes.
“Tell me,” Kael cried, trembling, “are two wolves inside my soul?
One is good and one is evil, and the one I feed takes all?”
She looked through all his scars, past the ruins and the wars:
“You ask which one will win…
not what they do with what is yours.”
“Feed Lumen just a simple smile, he’ll split it into three,
A thousand more in stranger’s eyes, a hidden legacy.
Give him a hand that lifts the weak, he multiplies that spark,
Kindness grows like rising stars, new fires in the dark.
Honesty becomes a shield, trust becomes a flame,
He turns your smallest act of good to lights that bear your name.”
“But feed Virex wounded pride and watch his true design:
He bends your need for dignity to boots on broken spines.
Give him pain, he’ll weaponize it, throw it down the line,
Give him power, see him shrink the world, devour what’s divine.
He turns good gifts to ash and dust, love into a blade,
He creates nothing, empties out the vaults inside your chest—
Rich in hollow victories…
and poor in all the rest.”
Kael saw faces in the flames that flickered at his feet:
The merchant with a gentle word that saved a stranger’s week,
The bully whose relentless scorn made quiet voices mute,
The teacher who believed in him when all his hope was bruised.
“They’re not just locked in me,” he breathed, “they walk in every street,
In every home, in every fight, in every word we speak.
The world’s warmth or frozen terror, all the light and all the wrath—
Is nothing but the total
of the wolves we choose to math.”
The woman’s voice came back to him, like storms that learned to sing:
“Child, you’re not a victim—
your choices crown a king.”
Wolves beneath the mountain, howling in my chest,
One builds a rising dawn, one bleeds out all the rest.
More than who will conquer when the hungers start—
It’s the math of the heart… the math of the heart!
Kindness shared is joy that echoes, multiplied through time,
Cruelty given steals the worth, drags futures down the line.
And they stay hungry in the silence of your chest,
In the words you never say, in each brave confess.
No spell, no crown—just one small fire for you to guard:
Feed the giver… let the devourer starve.
