Our East Coast is undeniably beautiful, but it's now increasingly threatened by plastic waste and ghost nets. Did you know that Malaysians are estimated to be exposed to over 500mg of microplastics every day? It’s a worrying amount.
Recently, Nestlé Malaysia and UMT Holdings, together with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), and over 350 volunteers took action through a coastal clean-up at Kubang Badak and Tok Jembal, as well as an underwater clean-up at Pulau Bidong. The effort also included repairing fishermen’s huts, providing fishing equipment, and delivering basic aid to the local fishing community.
Nearly 17 tonnes of marine waste were collected during the programme. It shows a clear reminder that when communities and organisations work together, real and meaningful change is possible.
