East Coker is the second of four poems, collectively known as 'Four Quartets', written in 1940. The name "East Coker" originates from the village in Somerset, England, that was the home of Eliot's first forebear to leave for America in the 17th century.
The poem is primarily focused with the place of man in the natural order and the cyclic notion of life. He argues that the only means to salvation is through seeking the divine by introspection and realising that humanity is interconnected. Only then can a person truly comprehend the universe.
Eliot divided East Coker into 5 Movements:
(0:13) Movement 1: Time
(4:26) Movement 2: Experience
(8:18) Movement 3: Purgation
(12:44) Movement 4: Prayer
(14:27) Movement 5: Wholeness
These 5 themes resonate throughout all his Four Quartets.
