Egor Letov: “Rotten Youth” / “Optimism” — technically, this was the first continuous full-length album of G.O., which was recorded multiple times in 1985.

It all ended with the group being mercilessly disbanded by state punitive authorities at the end of ’85: I was forcibly sent to a mental hospital, Kuzma was drafted into the army, and all this material was essentially shelved for two years.

What are known as the so-called “first” albums of G.O., popularly referred to as “Rotten Youth” and “Optimism”, are essentially remakes of the material from that aforementioned ultra-long G.O. album of 1985. They were recorded between January 12–22, 1988, after Kuzma Ryabinov returned from the army and recovered from it. Some tracks were completely reworked (as later happened, a year later, with the material for the album “Sowing”), and some were reconstructed using old tracks from 1985. The resulting albums themselves underwent repeated mixing and rearrangements, which I carried out over the course of the following years.
