Jogo do Besouro (2025) - violin and cello

This piece is inspired by the playfulness and delight I witnessed from capoeiristas in the O'ahu capoeira community. As a classically trained musician plagued by perfectionism, I grew substantially not just as an artist, but as a person in just a few months of participating in capoeira classes. Jogo do Besouro is a reflection on my journey as a beginning martial artist and finding joy in both the mistakes and the triumphs of learning. The instruments interact with one another as players rather than adversaries- exchanging back and forth in a push and pull musically resembling exchanges within martial arts.
Thank you to Jonathan Clarke Sypert for collaborating to bring martial art movements to this piece and of course Capoeira Besouro Hawaii for welcoming me into the community and teaching me about capoeira culture.
