I took a year out between starting my PhD and finishing my Masters, and have never regretted it. I often get asked on this channel and by other students what I did during that time and how I made the most of it -- here is one year in under six minutes.
Summary:
June - Got Masters results
August - Began Mars mapping job in London
September - Began research assistant job in Leicester
November - Went home
January - Applications due / Attended small planetary science conference
March - Interviews
April - Began bank job in Bristol
July - Bank job ended / Wrote Masters as a paper
September - Began PhD!
(By the way, it was only after I finished the video that I realised the irony of saying 'I don't like to talk about myself on this channel too much' when this is literally a channel about me talking about my PhD... I meant I don't like to go off memoir-style and talk about intricate details of my life. Just wanted to clarify in case that made anyone roll their eyes(!).)
New video every other, other, other Wednesday (final year PhD student now, the videos are fewer and further between but I am trying). Please comment to suggest a topic relating to postgraduate life that you’d like to see covered, or get in touch:
