Waymo announced it's bringing autonomous vehicles to Baltimore — and Governor Wes Moore is already in their press release celebrating "growth."
But growth for who? This technology is directly replacing gig workers who depend on driving to pay their rent or mortgage and feed their families. There's no retraining plan, no support from the state, and — according to University of Baltimore law professors — 850 Maryland laws need updating before this rollout is even legally consistent.
In this segment, Owen and Andy break down:
• The pattern: tech company comes in, regulation comes later
• The research: Nearly 850 state laws affected, almost 150 needing substantial revision
• The worker impact: from cab drivers to Uber to robots — each step sheds human labor
• The governor's role: appearing in corporate press releases instead of protecting workers
This is "move fast and break things" governance. And what gets broken is always people.
📰 The draft paper by Professors William Hubbard and Colin Starger at University of Baltimore Law is not yet published — we're watching for it.
