Sacred Heart Cathedral

Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo is one of Australia’s largest Gothic Revival churches, located in the regional city of Bendigo, Victoria. Commissioned in 1895 and designed by William Tappin of Reed, Barnes & Tappin, construction began in 1896 but was completed only in 1977 due to funding delays. Funded largely by the estate of Father Henry Backhaus, the first Catholic priest on the Bendigo goldfields, the cathedral showcases a grand English Gothic design with sandstone, granite, and marble throughout. Key features include an 87-metre central spire, hammerbeam roof, ornate altars, chapels, and a historic pipe organ built by Bishop & Son (UK).

The cathedral holds both religious and cultural significance, serving as the seat of the Diocese of Sandhurst while also attracting visitors for its architecture, stained glass, and heritage value. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and remains a landmark due to its elevated position and striking visibility across Bendigo. Sacred Heart Cathedral represents one of the last major Gothic cathedrals built in the 20th century and continues to be a site of worship, community events, and tourism.
