I visited Corjuem Fort in Goa, a hidden gem nestled on Corjuem Island, just 4 km from Aldona. Pre-Portuguese Era
Before the 16th century: Corjuem Island was under local Goan rulers — likely part of the Bhonsle Marathas or Adil Shahi Sultanate territories.
It was a strategic inland island on the River Mapusa, close to the main trade routes.
Portuguese Acquisition (Early 17th Century)
Around the late 1600s, the Portuguese were expanding inland from their coastal strongholds.
The island of Corjuem (Khorjuem) was captured to protect the Portuguese Bardez taluka from attacks by the Marathas, Bhonsles, and other local forces.
Fort Construction (1705)
Year: 1705 The Portuguese military under Caetano de Melo e Castro, the then Viceroy of Goa, ordered the construction of a small defensive fort on the island. Materials used: Laterite stones (a common material in Goa), lime mortar, and clay tiles. The fort had 4 bastions with cannon mounts, a small chapel, a guardhouse, and a magazine (armoury).
Purpose: To monitor and defend against inland attacks from rival kingdoms and to keep watch over river traffic. Strategic Importance in the 18th Century. The fort was considered strategically vital due to its elevated position and visibility over surrounding land and waterways.
1700s: The Marathas frequently attempted to invade parts of Goa; this fort served as a front-line defense. Soldiers stationed here also guarded against tribal raids and ensured tax and trade flow along the river was not disrupted.
The Unique Case of Ursula e Lancaster (Early 1800s)
One of the most fascinating events linked to Corjuem Fort. A Portuguese woman named Ursula e Lancaster, disguised herself as a man to join the army — a rare act at the time. She served at Corjuem Fort, hiding her identity until discovered. Her story became legendary and is still associated with the fort.
Decline & Abandonment (Mid 19th Century)
With the decline of Maratha power and better coastal defenses, the need for inland forts reduced. The fort was decommissioned by the Portuguese in the 1800s. It fell into disuse, though the structure remained mostly intact due to sturdy laterite construction.
Post-Portuguese Era (Post-1961)
After Goa’s liberation in 1961, the fort came under the care of the Goa government and Archaeological Department.
