Faulty spray patterns

Contaminated components, clogged air cap drillings, material that is too thin or too thick: there can be many causes for a faulty spray pattern. However, no matter what the cause is, it is essential to solve the problem as quickly as possible.

We recommend to check the spray pattern at least once a day - ideally before you start your paint job.

The spray fan of your spray gun is too small?

Possible causes could be:
◼ inlet pressure is set too low
◼ viscosity of the material is too high
◼ fluid tip is damaged
◼ round/flat spray control is not fully opened

How to solve the problem:
◻ Check the pressure setting with a SATA adam 2, SATA DIGITAL spray gun or SATA air micrometer with pressure gauge
◻ Check the viscosity of the material, possibly the change nozzle size, replace the nozzle set if necessary.
◻ Make sure that the round/flat spray control is fully opened

The spray fan of your spray gun is crescent-shaped?

Possible causes could be:
◼ Horn drillings are contaminated on one side
◼ Front drillings are clogged

How to solve the problem:
◻ Clean the air cap carefully with a suitable cleaning tool from SATA, replace the nozzle set if necessary.

The spray fan of your spray gun is split?

Possible causes could be:
◼ Viscosity set too low
◼ Spray pressure set too high
◼ Front drillings contaminated, partly clogged

How to solve the problem:
◻ Check the viscosity, choose a different nozzle size if necessary.
◻ Set the correct spray pressure by using the SATA adam 2, a SATA DIGITAL spray gun or the SATA air micrometer with pressure gauge.
◻ Clean the air nozzle carefully with a suitable cleaning tool from SATA, replace the nozzle set if necessary.

The spray fan of your spray gun is s-shaped?

Possible cause could be:
◼ Horn drillings are dirty.

Your paint material is spitting out of your spray gun?

Possible causes could be:
◼ Fluid tip is loose
◼ Fluid tip is clogged on the rear side
◼ Fluid tip sealing is damaged (only X 5500 models)
◼ Sealing area of the air distribution ring is damaged
◼ Ventilation hole of gravity flow cup is clogged

How to solve the problem:
◻ Tighten fluid tip as specified in the operating manual (SATA tool kit).
◻ Clean the fluid tip ("Cleaning and Maintenance of Paint Spray Guns")
◻ Replace the air distribution ring (depending on the spray gun model)
◻ Clean the ventilation hole by using the SATA cleaning kit (#64030)
