Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme is originally a Lutheran Hymn written by Phillip Nicolai in 1598, based on the Parable of the Ten Virgins. The Hymn was subsequently used by Bach as the basis for one of his chorale cantatas, BWV 140, which was first performed in November 1731. The fourth movement of the cantata, "Zion hears the watchmen signing", was then famously transcribed for organ as BWV 645 in 1747, and has since become one of Bach's most recognized pieces.
This arrangement for brass quintet of BWV 645, known in english as Sleepers Awake, features Taran Plamondon on French Horn.
A special thanks to Jean-François Taillard for this great arrangement and to Sean Bumstead for covering the trombone part on this recording.
