Scientists restore actual sunken treasure from an 1857 shipwreck - Daily Mail

Thousands of coins, dozens of gold bars, and 80lbs of dust was lost when the S.S. Central America sank in a hurricane off South Carolina in 1857. The trove was tracked down in 1988 by Tommy Thompson, backed by a team of investors, but has been locked up in legal battles ever since. Thompson is now in jail having spent years on the run from his backers accused of failing to reimburse them. The gold will be displayed in California in February, when all of the items will also be for sale.
