Expansion palette set up! Reusing old watercolours and pouring fresh paints

Today I'm setting up my expansion palette, which will be the new permanent home to a bunch of my favourite professional watercolours I like to use on occasion for particular hues or effects. This palette is designed to compliment my main palette and the everyday colours I use frequently. I'll take you through the pigments I'm adding to this palette, and why I am adding them. Some have qualities that are ideal for my line and colour illustrations, while others have qualities that I use for "special effects" such as the incredibly granulating French Ultramarine. Quite a lot of these are from the first professional watercolours I picked up when I was a beginner artist and moving on from using student watercolours. Still firm favourites, but no longer in daily use.

I answer a few questions I received about why I am making the palette, and why I am not using this as my main palette. If you have any further questions please leave them in the comments, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!

The palette I'm using is a Holbein RP-24 palette, which has removable slanted wells around the size of a full pan. For more information about the palette itself, check out the first impressions video from a couple weeks ago.

The concept of an additional palette to compliment the main colours you use is not something new. Plenty of artists have a similar concept in their practice, and I feel like it will work well in mine. The first time I heard the term "expansion palette" in particular though was by the artist Victoria Gedvillas. I love the term, as it makes me think of video game expansions. Which is why I sometimes think of this as a non-DLC palette. Non-downloaded expansion pack haha.

There will be no swatching in this video, but do not worry! I will be challenging myself to paint with only this palette in next week's video so you can see the paints in action.
