Nafse ammara, also known as "the commanding self" or "the soul that commands evil," is a concept in Islamic psychology and spirituality. It refers to the part of the human soul that urges individuals toward sin and wrongdoing. This aspect of the self is often associated with base desires, selfishness, and the inclination to act in ways that are contrary to moral and ethical values.
In Islamic teachings, the nafse ammara is contrasted with other states of the soul, such as nafse lawwama (the self-reproaching soul) and nafse mutma'inna (the tranquil soul). The nafse lawwama is aware of its wrongdoings and feels guilt, while the nafse mutma'inna is at peace and aligned with righteousness.
Understanding nafse ammara is important for personal development and spiritual growth, as it encourages individuals to recognize and overcome their base instincts in pursuit of a more virtuous life.
