Horton House, built around 1743, is the oldest standing structure on Jekyll Island and one of Georgia’s earliest surviving homes. Constructed from tabby—a mixture of oyster shells, lime, sand, and water—the house was built by Major William Horton, an early colonial leader. Directly across the road lies the duBignon Cemetery, the final resting place of the duBignon family, who later owned Jekyll Island for nearly a century. The cemetery marks the island’s transition from its colonial beginnings to its plantation era, preserving the legacy of the families who shaped Jekyll Island’s early history.
