With a booming economy and improving ties with the United States and NATO, Turkey now has a real chance to become a regional power. Yet formidable challenges remain, such as resolving the Kurdish issue, competing with Iran, and easing domestic political friction. To assess these issues and their impact on U.S. policy, The Washington Institute invited Ambassador Ross Wilson, Ambassador James F. Jeffrey, and Soner Cagaptay to address a Policy Forum luncheon in Washington, DC, on Monday, January 14, 2013.
Ross Wilson is director of the Atlantic Council's Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center and a lecturer in international affairs at George Washington University. Previously, he served as U.S. ambassador to Turkey (2005-2008) and Azerbaijan (2000-2003), in addition to posts in Moscow, Prague, and elsewhere.
James F. Jeffrey is a visiting fellow at The Washington Institute and former U.S. ambassador to Turkey (2008-2010) and Iraq (2010-2012). He also served as assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor in the George W. Bush administration.
Soner Cagaptay is the Beyer Family fellow and director of the Turkish Research Program at the Institute. His new report, "The New Turkey and U.S. Policy," traces Ankara's rise and what it means for Turks, the region, and the United States. Read the report here:
