Insider producer Kevin Reilly learns all about how to trim his own beard with the help of professional barber Matty Conrad, who is the owner and founder of Victory Barber & Brand in Victoria, British Columbia. To trim your own beard at home, you would need a wide-tooth comb, a brush, a towel, clippers, a trimmer, beard wash, and beard oil. The two elements of the beard are the interior, which is the bulk of the hair, and the outline, which is where the beard ends.

The outline is broken down into three sections, the top line (by the cheeks), the baseline (by the neck), and the lip line. People with fuller face shapes typically benefit from having a square, more linear beard, while people with narrow face shapes typically benefit from having a fuller, rounded beard. At the end of every beard trim, it’s important to use lightweight beard oil to protect the skin underneath and moisturize the beard. Jojoba, argan, or grape-seed oils are great on beards because they penetrate the beard, unlike heavy oils like avocado or coconut oil. The biggest mistakes first-time beard groomers make are using guards on their clippers for longer beards and trimming too much hair off.
