This is a review of Horizon Devices Precision Drive overdrive pedal, developed by Misha Mansoor of Periphery.
If you have the Kemper Profiling Amp, any Fractal Audio or Helix, for example, this is what you need to add that little extra to achieve a modern metal sound.
Precision Drive has a non-conventional gate knob. It doesn’t choke the sound at all. In the modern metal production, the gate is an imperative to cut out the noise with the high gain sounds, especially on the rhythm guitar parts. Precision Drive gate doesn’t change the tone at all. What else is unique is the “Attack” knob - there are six different positions to use in the conjunction with the “Bright” knob. This is where the magic originates.
Beside opening song, there is a demonstration of how the Precision Drive reacts with the guitar at the end of the video.
EQUIPMENT:
Kemper Profiling Amp with Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier profiles; a second channel for the rhythm patch. The attack on the Precision Drive is the all way up, simply because of the humbucker pickup set on the guitar. On the single coils, you might want to back down a bit… The brightness is at 1 o’clock, and the gate is all the way up because of the palm mutes.
For the solo: Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier third channel, but with the gate all the way down in this case, and the drive just a little bit up for the extra sustain.
GUITAR:
custom made Q.Rich 8 string "Dorian 8" model, with the “High A” tuning
BOUZOUKI:
Greek 8 string Bouzouki.
