Most people assume I know how to fish because I grow and hunt my own food and live by the ocean. The truth? I was fishless. In this video, I document my painfully humbling (and surprisingly expensive) journey to catch my first West Coast salmon after 13 years of ignoring the opportunity right in front of me.
From gear breakdowns and early-morning riverside fails to a neighbor’s pity-powered mentorship and a whole lot of learning the hard way — this is the story of how I finally stopped pretending I knew what I was doing, picked up a rod, and discovered a new wild food source I now can’t live without.

Hey I'm Mike and I make a show called "The Land Provides," where I explore my relationship with wild food and the connection it fosters to people and place. I'm in the process of editing season 2, so in the meantime I've got a bunch of unscripted gardening and hunting content that I'll be uploading once a month.
