Developmental venous anomalies (DVA) are the most common type of vascular malformation, present in just under 3% of adult patients. They are common "incidentalomas", and only rarely cause bleeding or symptoms. They may be associated with cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) in up to 1/3 of patients. The increasing use of flow sensitive vascular MRI - such as susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) increases both the sensitivity and specificity for DVA.
