Heavily influenced by gospel and soul music Isla and Jetse perform songs inspired by Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin, and PJ Morton. The duo met at the Conservatory of Amsterdam where they discovered a mutual admiration for the excitement and swinging sounds so recognizable for the music from that era. They have been performing throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, and France always paying tribute to the great. Now they have been writing together on what eventually will come out as an album. These two songs are hot off the press and have never been performed before. Again an exciting first timer for our sessions at De Roode Bioscoop.
Isla Van Hout (1996) is a jazz vocalist from Belgium, based in Amsterdam. She finished her master's studies in 2020 and graduated with a 9. During her master’s degree in jazz vocals at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, she lived and studied abroad at Temple University in Philadelphia. There she had the opportunity to take lessons with Dick Oatts, John Swana, Ruth Naomi Floyd, etc. She mainly focused on writing new music and discovering her original voice in the battle between genres such as jazz, blues, gospel and, soul music. Back home in Amsterdam she recorded Bring It On, an album about life, heartache, loving someone else but most of all loving yourself. Bring It On was released in November 2020.
Some think that pianist and composer Jetse de Jong fell into a big pot of New Orleans’ Gumbo as a child. After a few days, he climbed out and hasn’t stopped playing the piano ever since. In reality, he found his calling after hearing the music of rock ‘n roll legend Fats Domino. With different groups, he toured and performed the last years in the Netherlands, New Zealand, Belgium, Germany, France, Finland, Estonia, and Slovenia. Multiple albums have appeared and the single ‘Benjamin Lucas’ on which Grammy-award winner John Scofield appeared as a guest soloist. In 2019 he graduated from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. His debut album ‘Intercities’ received critical acclaim in different reviews and blogs. As the regular accompanist of singer Sven Ratzke, he will be performing internationally in the coming months. Together with his father, vibraphonist Hein de Jong, he recently recorded an album with the music of Horace Silver. Next to performing and composing Jetse is preparing a book on the New Orleans Piano tradition.
