• The Mecom fountain sits in the traffic circle where Main Street and Montrose Boulevard meet, marking the entrance to Hermann Park and the surrounding Museum District.
• It was designed by architect Eugene Werlin and built in 1964 as a gift from oilman John W. Mecom Sr. and his wife Mary.
• In design: the fountain features three elevated circular bowls set inside a larger oval or oblong basin/retaining wall.
• At the time of its completion, it was the largest fountain in Houston.
• It is considered a significant piece of mid-century modernist public art/architecture: the concrete forms, the setting, and the visibility at a major urban entry point all contribute to its importance.
• The fountain has become a beloved landmark and common backdrop for photography (especially engagement, quinceañera, or graduation portraits) because of its aesthetic clarity and central location.
