How to source metal for a steel striker. It should be carbon steel -not stainless steel, and not soft steel. Your average nail, flat stock, angle iron, sheet metal, etc is soft steel. Many tools are carbon steel especially vintage and antique tools. A file or a chisel might be your best bet. But lots of different things will work. I will show you many in this video. They can be found cheap at yard sales and thrift stores. You can get them free in dumps and old cellar holes. Add to it a local rock (flint, chert, or quartz) and an old tin (Altoids tin, etc) and there you have a free flint & steel fire kit. If you want, you can modify the tool or other object into a striker. It's easy. In this video I will show you how.
