In "H-24" we observe a major engagement that occurs several hours after "36 hours to Oblivion" ( • Warno Cinematic - "36 Hours to Oblivion" U... ), whereby US and Soviet forces are forced into a direct meeting engagement with little recourse but frontal assault. Specifically, the 82nd Airborne are deployed in force across the width of the sector, and arrayed in sections of the map that are designed to exploit highly central nodes within the road network of the map, thereby forcing Soviet forces to transit through them to navigate the geography.
In the desperate battle that ensues, we will observe what happens if a highly mechanized force is compelled, beyond reason, to engage an adversary in a combined-arms frontal assault, with highly-contested air, and thus virtually no element of surprise. The only benefit that either force really has (besides numbers for the Soviet side), is the fact that the other side is also compelled towards a meeting engagement, and thus can expect little fortification or preparations.
In our case, Warno has not yet implemented fortifications and field preparation/obstacles, however within the context of the "story" I've set up, both sides are in a race-against-time to seize as much land as possible before "H-Hour" (or the moment when at least one side has decided to deploy strategic weapons). This is the so-called "Fulda Gap" scenario/conundrum.
We will observe the slaughter that occurs in such a scenario, and note that were one side allowed to setup fortifications, that the slaughter would certainly be worst for the assaulting side, especially with highly contested air. It would be unwise to attempt such an enterprise (simulation or otherwise).
With this and future installments we will take care to make some kind of assessment on the net-costs/gains for actions taken in the scenario, and to emphasize the cost to build intuition on what actions may or may not be wise for a given commander. Since this is game, there is no actual cost, but we should try to make apparent what such a cost could be were it be real, since in real life, the cost comes not only in equipment/capital, but in human lives, which cannot be replaced.
