We dedicate this dive to Kristina Gjerde, one of the deep sea’s greatest champions, and a Schmidt Advisory Board member. For decades she has been fighting to protect deep-sea ecosystems through international marine law. Kristina has been instrumental in conceptualizing and advocating for the recently ratified UN Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). Her influence as an advocate for the precautionary principle has reverberated in the realms of deep-sea mining and mesopelagic fishing. She has worked tirelessly as IUCN’s High Seas Advisor, as co-founder of the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative, and as guiding advisor of the UN Ocean Decade, the High Seas Alliance, Sargasso Sea Project,
Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative and the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition. Kristina, the deep sea is forever grateful to you.


We will descend to a water depth of approximately 3,000 m to explore the wall of a submarine canyon that incises the slope over 750 m. After diving roughly 150 m along the thalweg (the canyon floor), we will ascend just east of a prominent, 25 m-high bumpy feature that crosses the canyon wall transversely. Over a distance of approximately 1.5 km, we will document habitat variations across different depths, as well as associated geological features. During the last few hundred meters of the dive, just below the canyon rim, we will explore a steep wall where we expect to encounter exposed rock outcrops.

Descripción de la inmersión:
Descenderemos a una profundidad de aproximadamente 3000 metros para explorar la pared de un cañón submarino que se extiende a lo largo de más de 750 metros en la pendiente. Tras descender unos 150 metros a lo largo del lecho del cañón, ascenderemos justo al este de una prominente formación irregular de 25 metros de altura que atraviesa la pared del cañón transversalmente. A lo largo de aproximadamente 1,5 kilómetros, documentaremos las variaciones del hábitat a diferentes profundidades, así como las características geológicas asociadas. Durante los últimos cientos de metros de la inmersión, justo debajo del borde del cañón, exploraremos una pared escarpada donde esperamos encontrar afloramientos rocosos.
