Mycoplasma‐like organisms (MLOs) were first observed by Doi et al. in 1967.
The term phytoplasma was adopted in 1992.
Mycoplasma (phytoplasma) has a pleomorphic structure with a double membrane and no cell walls.
It exists in the phloem of plants and transmitted by phloem‐feeding insects.
It is sensitive to tetracycline and insensitive to penicillin.
The size of chromosomes ranges from 530 to 1350 kb.
