August 23rd 2025, the team headed back to an old and iconic community theatre on Auckland's north shore that we last visited about 11 years ago. Theatreworks, in Birkenhead.
We figured it was about time for another visit. It's a nice little team fav, formerly an old school building which was moved to the site in the 1970s. This much-loved theatre has a few ties to another of our shore-based favourites, The PumpHouse Theatre.
TheatreWorks - the home of the Mairangi Players, a community-based theatre group that has been performing since 1952. Many performers have come and gone since then, of course; however, current members have begun to get the feeling that some past members may be lingering on well into the afterlife...
There have been reports of objects being moved from one location and appearing in another when no one else is present. Shadows seen out of the corner of their eye, and a general feeling of never being alone and often feeling watched when alone in the building.
Shadows are seen, voices and footsteps are heard, and items are moved around or go missing, only to return soon after.
It is believed by many of the performers at TheatreWorks that the presence is that of Cicely Margaret Escott (more commonly known by the name “Peg”), who served on the Mairangi Players committee and directed many plays from 1977 until her body was found in the Waitemata Harbour at Takapuna Beach on 15 August 1977.
(Notably, “Peg” is also linked to the Pumphouse Theatre in Takapuna, where the Mairangi Players also perform. Her presence is said to have been seen and felt there also.)
This is a video document of our 2nd session at the theatre.
Note: We make no claims of paranormal activity.
This is a fun compilation of various footage from various cameras that filmed through the night. It has been heavily edited to make it interesting, but the footage itself is kept raw and unfiltered. The reality of much of the session is just team members sitting and observing, whilst the cameras roll, in the hopes that something of interest might be recorded.
Enjoy. It was a fun session!
