Hi, Jeff Fierstein from Byers. Today, we're here with Tim Jones Roofing. Tim Jones is a fourth generation roofer right here in Northern California who has developed a system called Valley Armor that corrects a problem that plagues tile roofs and causes millions of dollars of damage. So, stick around and see how we're gonna solve the problem of clogged up
valleys on your tile roof.
So Tim under the tiles, there's a valley flashing shaped like a W and there's some returns on the edges that keeps water from flowing over the edges. What's the problem that's getting in there? We're seeing debris up here in this valley, but can't you just blow that out?
TIM: You could, but it doesn't get under the valley 'cause the leaves and debris are already under the valley and get dammed up behind the tiles themselves. The water can't flow through.
J: And then, you got water inside your house.
T: And then you've got water flowing sideways instead of downhill, which you just can't have.
J: Now, one of the things about a tile roof that everybody finds so attractive is it's fire resistant, right?
T: Correct.
J: That's a concrete tile, it's not gonna burn. Looking at this valley above us, there's a lot of debris in that valley. The same problem we have with gutters when you have debris sitting in a valley or in gutters, you get a--
T: It's a fire hazard.
JEFF: It's a fire hazard. That's right. This is also gonna kinda eliminate or really help to keep debris out of the valley.
TIM: Well it makes it, so maybe even a homeowner or somebody that's not a roofing contractor, able to clean the valley, instead of us having to come and take all your tiles out, cleaning your valleys and re-install 'em.
JEFF: 'Cause that's what we've been doing in the past.
TIM: And that's what we've been doing for years. We clean thousands of foot a year.
JEFF: Now the valleys that they're putting in today are different than the valleys that we used 30 years ago.
TIM: They call five rib where there's more humps on 'em. But they don't help either. It might slow it down a little bit, but the debris keeps going over each hump, over each hump, until it's in again.
JEFF: But you've got a system that really keeps anything from getting in there in the first place.
TIM: Correct, so the water, the debris' not going, even the water on the valleys that doesn't get under either. And the Valley Armor, it's watertight as well. So it keeps the water out and the debris out. So if a little bit of water does get under there, it flows to the bottom, just like it should.
JEFF: Now they're not using this so much yet in new construction, do you think they will?
TIM: If they're smart, they will. Why wouldn't you? Why wouldn't you prevent it? It's a preventative measure from causing damage later in the future. Why wouldn't you put it on a new house?
JEFF: Right, right.
TIM: It's just a good product, it really is, it works.
JEFF: Byers is all about products that keep people off the roof. I'm guessing that the Valley Armor will clear itself out better than this open valley, even the closed cut valleys. You know, some of the valleys that we see on tile roofs are actually open more than others. This one has a pretty closed cut on it, but the open valleys are really horrible. People have got to go up there and maintain those quite often.
TIM: If you have a lot of trees like this, homeowner does, good idea to put this stuff on. Even if you don't have trees, people don't realize it. Even just the dust in the air,
accumulates behind the tiles. And it's, I have seen it this deep, just in mud, it doesn't
have to have even any leaf to cause a dam behind the valley. Every day it rains, every day the water just flows even just like I say, dew flows just a little bit of dust. Always follows with the water. And it just, it builds up over years.
