There Are No Guilty People, by Leo Tolstoy
37. "The Great Lesson"
Adapted from "There Are No Guilty People" by Leo Tolstoy
Characters:
Narrator
Little Alex (a curious child)
Mother
Father
Old Wise Man
Children in the Village (who can be played by multiple actors)
Setting:
The scene takes place in a quaint village with a simple home and a grassy field. There is a central area where most of the dialogue and action take place, with a small area for the Wise Man's house.
Scene 1: The Village
(The stage is set with a backdrop of a small village with a few simple props: a house, a well, and some trees. Children play in the background. Little Alex and his parents are at the center of the stage.)
Narrator: (Stepping forward) Welcome to a peaceful village where everyone lived in harmony. Little Alex is about to learn a very important lesson about guilt and forgiveness.
Little Alex: (Running to his parents) Mom! Dad! I accidentally broke the window with my ball!
Mother: (Concerned) Oh no, Alex! That’s not good. You must have been very careless.
Father: (Sighing) We’ll have to find a way to fix it. But you know what this means, don’t you? You have to be more careful next time.
Little Alex: (Looking sad) I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to do it.
Mother: (Softening) We know you didn’t mean to. But you still need to be responsible.
Father: (Nodding) Yes, accidents happen, but it’s important to learn from them.
Narrator: Little Alex felt very sad and guilty. He wished he could make things right. But he didn’t understand why such things had to happen.
Scene 2: The Wise Man’s House
(Alex walks to the Wise Man’s house. The Wise Man, an old man with a kind face, is sitting outside, reading a book.)
Little Alex: (Approaching nervously) Excuse me, Wise Man, I broke a window by accident. My parents say I need to be responsible. But I feel really bad. Is it my fault?
Old Wise Man: (Smiling gently) Ah, come and sit with me, young Alex. Let me tell you a story.
Narrator: The Wise Man began to tell Alex a story about a village long ago.
Scene 3: The Story
(The stage transforms to a different setting with villagers dressed in simple costumes, resembling a historical village. The Wise Man narrates while the villagers act out the story.)
Old Wise Man: (Narrating) Long ago, in a faraway land, there was a village where people lived in peace. But one day, a big storm came, and it caused a lot of damage.
(Villagers pretend to be working, fixing roofs, and cleaning up. One villager accidentally breaks a pot.)
Villager 1: Oh no! I broke the pot!
Villager 2: (Upset) That was a very special pot. Now we have to find a way to replace it.
Old Wise Man: (Narrating) The villagers gathered to discuss who was at fault. But the wise elder of the village said, “It is not about finding fault. We must help each other fix what’s broken.”
(The villagers come together and work to fix the broken pot, helping one another.)
Old Wise Man: (Narrating) They realized that blaming each other only made things harder. When they worked together, they found a way to solve their problems.
Scene 4: Back at the Wise Man’s House
(The stage returns to the Wise Man’s house. Little Alex looks thoughtful.)
Little Alex: So, it’s not about who is guilty, but about how we can fix things and help each other?
Old Wise Man: Exactly, Alex. Everyone makes mistakes. What matters is how we handle them and support one another. There is no need for guilt, only understanding and learning.
Little Alex: (Smiling) I understand now. I’ll try to fix the window with my parents and be more careful next time.
Old Wise Man: That’s the spirit. Remember, helping and understanding are what make us grow.
