The abandoned pancake restaurant in Houck, Arizona, was part of the Fort Courage Trading Post, a Route 66 attraction themed after the TV show F Troop, featuring a distinctive windmill-like building originally from Van de Kamp's, later operating as a Pancake House and Ortega's Tacos before closing around 2005/2014, becoming a well-known roadside ruin alongside the main fort replica and gas station.
History & Timeline:
Origins: The building was a Van de Kamp's Dutch Bakery, built around 1967, one of only a few of its design ever constructed.
F-Troop Era: It became part of the Fort Courage complex in the 1970s, capitalizing on the F Troop craze, serving as a Pancake House and later Ortega's Tacos.
Decline: The entire complex, including the pancake house and fort, gradually declined, with final closures around 2005 (as Ortega's) and the fort itself in 2014.
Current Status: The site, including the unique pancake house structure, is abandoned, visible from I-40, and has been up for sale, a popular spot for urban explorers and Route 66 enthusiasts.
Key Features:
Architecture: The building's distinctive shape, originally for Van de Kamp's, became iconic for the Route 66 stop.
Fort Courage: It's adjacent to the main fort replica, a gas station, and other structures, all part of the defunct roadside attraction.
