In July 2022, the Minister of Hydrocarbons, Didier Budimbu, announced calls for tenders for 30 oil blocks in DRC including 27 oil and three gas for hydrocarbon rights. Block V, which is located in the territories of Lubero and Rutshuru in the province of North Kivu, includes a large part of the Virunga park and particularly Lake Edward.
Josué Mukura, a Congolese fisherman and environmental activist, denounced this plan, which he said would have devastating impacts on the local economy and environment.
