Today on our 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 75139. Next we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 7-1/2". From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 16". This will assist you with selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. Now we'll go ahead with the installation. To begin our install we'll first go ahead and locate our attachment points.

We'll have a total of 5 attachment points: 2 on the driver side, and 3 on the passenger. These attachment points are weld nuts built into the frame by the manufacturer and in all except for the rear attachment point on the passenger side have a manufacturer's bolt in the weld nut currently. Three of them are fasteners for the skid shield and the rear attachment point is a fastener for the rear reinforcement bar. First we'll go ahead and remove these four fasteners. We'll hang onto the hardware as we'll reuse it to install the hitch. For our 5th attachment point, the rear attachment point on the passenger side, we'll go ahead and clean out the weld nut because over time it's going to build up with rust, dust, dirt, and debris and can be difficult to install the new fastener.

To clean it out we'll use a 1/2" nylon tube brush, part number 814092, and some spray lubricant. Once we have it thoroughly cleaned out we'll go ahead and install the new 12 millimeter bolt and make sure it will go in nice and easily. Now with all our attachments repaired we're ready to go ahead and install the hitch. For the rear attachment point on the passenger side we're going to sandwich a spacer block between the hitch and the frame. To help put it into position we'll go ahead and tape it directly to the hitch now. Using some black electrical tape we'll just secure the block to the hitch attachment point.

We'll next lift the hitch into position. It may be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your hardware. For our fifth attachment point, the rear attachment point on the passenger side, we'll go ahead and install the new 12 millimeter bolt and conical tooth washer. When installing the hardware be sure to note that the teeth of the conical washer should face the hitch. Now once we have all the fasteners in place we'll go ahead and tighten them down. Next we'll torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions.

With all our fasteners secured and torqued to specifications, we're now ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of the Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 75139, on our 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .
