Ego defense mechanisms are unconscious psychological strategies people use to protect themselves from feelings of anxiety, unpleasant emotions, or threatening thoughts. These mechanisms were first proposed by Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, and later expanded upon by other psychologists.
