What does it mean to walk away—or even step back—when the world expects Black Women to stay loyal at all costs?

In this powerful panel discussion, we’re naming the unspeakable: the grief, the guilt, and the generational weight of choosing low contact or no contact with a mother who may have been both nurturer and source of harm. As Black women, we are often judged harshly—by family, by culture, by ourselves—for setting boundaries that protect our peace. This conversation is for those living in that tension.

We’re diving deep into the complexities of:

Being the “black sheep”—or maybe, the light worker—in your family

Facing judgment like: “How dare you? Who do you think you are to step away?”

Experiencing “divide and conquer” dynamics with siblings

Carrying the weight of being the only child or the oldest daughter

The ache of “self-orphaning”—where no contact doesn't feel like freedom, just silence

Estrangement grief and anticipatory guilt around your mother’s mortality

Being envied for your body, beauty, or confidence—especially during puberty

Deciding whether or not to become a mother yourself, and the fear of repeating cycles

And what it means to stop the transmission of trauma, even when it hurts

This is not a conversation about blame—it’s a conversation about truth, healing, and reclaiming power in our relationships and within ourselves.
