Mission Complete.
In 8 months, I went from hanging my queen, to beating a 2000 FIDE in a classical tournament. Here is my chess journey, I have retired.
At Go Genius, we believe in multi-lane skills. My background in Go (Baduk) gave me a head start in calculation, allowing me to calibrate at 800 Elo on Day 1. From there, I treated chess as a logic problem to be solved. I applied my lessons in Go (Former Australian National Go Champion), and put it into chess.
Spending only a reasonable amount of time to study chess (1-2hrs a day), here is my storyline.
The 8-Month Speedrun Timeline:
Start: 800 Elo (Go calculation skills applied).
Month 2: Played my first Blitz Tournament. Beat a 1400 FIDE.
Month 4: Defeated a 1600 FIDE.
Month 5: Crushed two 1700 FIDE players in a Rapid OTB tournament.
Month 6 (The Peak): As a 1400 FIDE rated player, I defeated a 2000+ FIDE player in Classical OTB. He has played chess for over 20 years.
Month 8: Hit 2000 on Chess.com and scored 37 on 3-minute Puzzle Rush.
I set a goal to reach a master-level understanding (2000 benchmark) and prove that skills are transferable. I have achieved that.
In this video, I break down my final Puzzle Rush run, show the calculation techniques I brought over from Go, and explain why I’m closing the chess chapter to continue on my own lane.
I also have a survival puzzle rush where I reach 55, the video is right here - • How Fast can a Go Master Solve These Chess...
