Designing Covers and Pages for Children's Books

I am now settled on a cover design for the fist book in my Generation Moon trilogy. It's taken a while to get there and a bit of reasoning.

Being a middle-grade book, it's aimed at 8-12 year olds. The cover needs to be more sophisticated than a picture book for younger readers, but not so grown up to suggest itself to a Young Adult audience.

In this video I show you my thought processes and all the sketches and failed attempts along the way.

I have also finished laying out the book in inDesign. A straight text novel can have the text flow easily though the book and be adjusted after.

It's more complicated when there are illustration peppered through the text. Spaces have to be created in the right place. This pushes text towards the space left at the end of the book, but it has to be portioned out carefully if you are to meet your page number target.
