Can baby elephants walk from birth? As it turns out… yes, they can! In fact, it is widely known that baby elephants do indeed have a hard time standing on their feet within their first minutes after birth. However, the immediate action of the mother and the other matriarch elephants in the family give the newborn elephant calf all the encouragement it needs.

Right after hitting the earth, newborn baby elephants are covered in an amniotic membrane. However, this tissue is quickly removed as the mother elephant works to clean up her newborn baby elephant and (in most cases) accepts the calf for suckling.
